Martin Kippenberger (25 February 1953 – 7 March 1997) was a German painter, draftsman, photographer, sculptor, installation and performance artist. He became known for his prolific output in a wide range of styles and media, superfiction, as well as his provocative, jocular and hard-drinking public persona partially depicted in Ursula Blöcker’s “Martin Kippenberger’s ‘Magical Misery Tour’”. Böckler, the artist’s assistant at the time, depicts Kippenberger dancing in bars, celebrating his 33rd birthday and performing for the camera.

Along with his artworks are the variations of approaches to designs for posters from text. Based experiments to his poster, Candidacy for a Retrospective (1993) with the artist pictured sporting an iconic Misfits devilock.

During the last 10 years of his life Kippenberger created a series of drawings on hotel stationery, which are commonly referred to as the 'hotel drawings' (1987–1997). Originally undertaken as ad hoc preparatory diagrams for the three-dimensional Peter sculptures, he later used the myriad letterheads of innumerable hotels to capture other subjects and inspirations.

In 1991 Kippenberger created “Zuerst die Füße (Feet First)” featuring a crucified frog with a beer stein and an egg. When a version of it later displayed in an Italian Museum was deemed offensive to Catholics even inspiring an Italian official to start a hunger strike and condemnation by the Pope.
